Seriously, though, a simple way to determine how different
dice stack up against each other is to add the number to
the die type and compare:

For example 4d8 vs 3d10:

Using statsitcal mumbo-jumbo, we can determine that the
average rolls for these two are 9.08 and 9.62,
respectively.  Using the simple method, we see that 4+8=12,
and 3+10=13, making 3d10 "better"

This method works for everything, except 1dx types, which
it tends to weight too high, but otherwise it is a quick
and easy way to operate.
