I'm not sure but I think the point of this was to determine the person was 
harrowed with out killing them in the process.  Its kind of like how they 
found proved someone was a witch.  Throw them in the River if they Drowned 
there fine Christian souls go to heaven, if they dont, the devil helped them 
so there witches so we need to burn him/her.

But hell if you dont care if the subject dies or is maimed there are about 
500 ways ways to figure out if there harrowed.
