"Uh . . . now?  Oh, yeah, this guy, Casey?  He was this Law Dog or somethin'
from Texarcana and he went with us for a few months . . . Real quiet most of
the time . . . Jack, he didn't like Casey for some reason . . . They was
allways arguin' . . . Jack, now, he's a smart man, but we all liked Casey .
. . he could burp the whole alphabet, and uh . . . Well this one time Casey
started wanderin' off by himself whenever we'd stop to eat or sleep or take
a sh, well, you know . . . And then he started talkin funny, and then, I
swear I saw him cut the brake line to Amos' pickup, so when me and Jack went
to ask him about it, we saw him eatin' this dead buzzard . . . I mean like,
rotted . . . and then Jack hollered at him and Casey just dove into the
ground like it was water . . . We could see this little ridge of dirt
headin' off towards the Texas state line . . . Jack said it was the dangdest
thang he'd ever seen . . . I guess that's when we figured Casey was one o'
them harrowed . . . Makes me wonder about all those times he was burpin' the
alphabet . . . I mean, what was he eatin' to make him do that?"
