First, you're figuring the cost of parts to make an item. The sheer
material required to make a handgum probably costs about $2 total. It's
the process of putting it into a gun shape that costs the cash.
Second, you intentionally ignore the battery in this design. A weapon
with 10 Drain is a expensive piece of work. That's 1 ounce of ghost rock
(from a normal collector) per shot. The NA XM-21 (from Wasted West) does
3d8 damage per shot and can get 50 shots out of the same ounce, just as a
bit of perspective. That's kinda the point behind Flash Gordon: it takes
the expense that you'd otherwise have in parts and difficulty building
and converts it into higher Drain. This is great for junkers with
reactors or nuclear G-Ray collectors, but for your average Joe, it can be
tough.
Third, the Iron Oasis update has a change to the way the Ammo power
works. For a weapon that does 5d8, the ammo size is figured as if it was
15d8; Ammo Size 3. That makes a big difference.
Now, the funny part about the new ammo power is that you can make an
explosive with a Burst Radius of 1 yard (-50%) that needs no propellant
(-50%), and have a weapon with virtually no size. They're in almost
infinite supply, you can make the damage as high as you like, and the
only thing you'd need to make a batch of however many you wanted is a
couple structural components.
