RE: [HOE] Armor-piercing question
Is this a standard round, that'll fit into any rifle? If so, that would be
hard to justify, even with RPG physics.
However, if these are larger calibre rounds (say 12mm or greater), or if
they are over-charged rounds, then it's not too hard.
In WW2, the German's had a very successful Anti-tank rifle, which fired a
normal .50 calibre round. What made it an anti-tank rifle was that the
projectile was fired with what was essentially a 30mm cartridge. Imagine a
rifle round, and then 'inflate' the cartridge part (not the bullet itself)
by about 10 or 15 times. This is basically what an over-charged round is.
If the round is actually larger, then you have a few more options available
to you. You can use discarding sabot rounds, which have a large 'glove'
which surrounds a smaller, sub-calibre penetrator, and which is jettisoned
during the round's flight towards the target.
You could have the round propelled as a gyro- or ram-jet, which due to a
small jet-like effect caused by it's rapid movement, actually gains momentum
during flight, thereby actually hitting harder at longer ranges.
Another variation on this is actual 'rocket' rounds, which due to their
sheer size (about an inch in diameter) can deliver far more payload to the
target, or have much more propellant, thereby enabling the round to
accelerate longer, or faster, than a normal round.
How's that for a start?
Ashley.
