During WW2 (or thereabouts, I'm unsure of the exact year) the US Navy did
some experiments with trying to make a ship (the USS Eldridge) completely
invisible to radar. The experiment (or part of it, there are reports of
previous attempts, successful and not) was held in a navy harbour in
Philadelphia. There is a report that when they turned on the power, the
ship disappeared, reappearing a while later. Really weird stuff supposedly
happened to the crew. Some had fused into the bulkheads or decks, some had
disappeared, and so on. There was a report that the ship was spotted in a
different port at the time it disappeared. Another report said that some of
the crew appeared in a bar somewhere in the US, then disappeared again. The
Navy reportedly stopped experimenting with that type of radar-negation.

If it really did happen (there's some interesting evidence, but no proof),
a lot of really weird things went on. At least one movie, The Philadelphia
Experiment (and a less-interesting sequel), was made about it, maybe more.

I think in the end the Eldridge sunk off the coast somewhere years later,
but I'm *really* unsure about that.

Check it out on a search engine sometime, there's a lot of interesting
theories (though the ratio of logic:wackiness varies from site to site).
