The alternate futures thing seems like a cop out, but Jackie herself
suggests the possibility.  In the journal she says that she doesn't know if
taking the diamond back thru the portal to the future will have any effect,
nor what the effect may be.  Apparently the effect could be that you step
out into the future, to find none of the scientists Ms. Wells described,
just non-functioning equipment in the middle of a no-tech zone.  Boy,
wouldn't that screw up a posse, all prepped to take on the future Jackie
describes, but instead of scientists you find some slavering monster or
angry Indian band?  Hmmm, gonna have to do that to my Weird West posse if
they go thru the portal!
