I think what Rich was saying (and SW supports this, and I'd agree) that
there _is_ a difference in how they view radiation. Doomsayers perceive it
as a monotheistic God-like force, while Shamans "know" it as a bunch of
little toxic rad spirits running around.
The catch here is more that they _use_ it in (many, if not all instances)
the same way. Which is where I disagreed with Rich. A purple-rober casting
Nuke and getting, say, 5 raises is doing the "work" of the rad spirits, even
if the doomsayer doesn't believe it. And presumably he should attract a
Guardian Spirit rad-type.

With Silas, IMO, but also what SW hints at, it's a matter of control. He
doesn't want anyone tapping into the Glow in any way other then the way he
ordains. Having such a sub-sect would invalidate his own preachings, and
weaken his control of his army of mutants and rad-worshippers.
The question to my mind is more the interaction between purple-robers and
Rad Shamans. Given that Silas absolutely hates Rad Shamans, the book saying
that schismatic doomsayers are "a little more tolerant" (page 26) makes it
seem like they don't hate them quite as much but still quite a bit It seems
to me that the mild distrust engendered because rad shamans can make
themselves immune to Doomsayers miracles would be balanced by the fact that
a lot of purple-robers are going to pick up rad spirits.
Or to put it another way...in my campaign the Doomsayer PC _has_ attracted a
Rad Guardian Spirit. So we have a from-scratch example here. His Mentor
didn't particularly brief him on the fact he should automatically dislike
distrust Rad Shamans. The player has never _met_ a rad shaman before (not
surprising, since the book just came out :) ), so he has no personal reason
to distrust them. The player is pretty much on his own as far as exactly
what he does make of this.
The player (not unreasonably) has concluded that the rad spirit he has is a
_good_ aspect of the Glow. And that since Rad Shamans call on similar
resources, and most often end up mutated to boot, they are just slightly
mislead Chosen followers of the Glow.
It strikes me that there are several possible subplots here:
1) As green-robed Doomsayers (not Doombringers) start to attract rad
spirits, does this start to form a schism within the Cult of Doom anyway?
2) Does Joan and the Mentors overcome their (somewhat feebly motivated, IMO)
distrust of rad shamans?
3) Do the schismastics and rad spirits (at least the cleansers, and maybe
even more friendly corrupters) ally?
4) Since the rad shamans have a different, but in some ways superior way of
calling upon the Glow (or whatever they call it, i.e., "Toxic Spirits"),
might not Joan look to augment her Doomsayers' abilities with rad Guardian
Spirits?
*shrug* It seems that until the Lost Vegas sourcebook comes out, the Cult of
Doom will continue to get short shrift. Unless I missed something, it seems
to be all-Combine, all the time, as far as what the major threat is,
mentions of it in the back-of-the-book section, etc. Hopefully at some
point Silas is going to bust a move a bit stronger then sending out
missionaries. Children of the Atom certainly implies he's got big plans, but
the Combine menace seems to have usurped any importance he has in Pinnacle's
meta-campaign.
