First off let me stipulate this with the fact that I'm a gun nut, sorta.  
I'm from a small town in the South, I didn't get into the truck scene but I 
got into the gun scene in a big way.

Many SWAT/specail units prefer a revolver to an automatic.  The automatic 
has the possibility to jam.  Jams in an intense situation are very very bad. 
  With a double action revolver if you misfire a round you just squeeze 
again and kapow.  Yeah there is the fact that you have a hot round in the 
cylinder but in my experience a misfire has yet to go off.  So there is a 
trade off there, jams with lead to you getting shot up, or the off chance 
that your misfired round still goes off and you lose a hand at least.

Automatics are generally more accurate though cause the firing action only 
involves pulling the trigger.  WHile the action on a DAR rotates the 
cyliner, cocks the hammer and eventually drops the hammer.  So in all the 
pulling your aim suffers, but most DAR's can be manually cocked like a 
single action and then fired when accuracy is most important.  But in 
intense situations like that most special weapon teams would encounter you 
are pretty close to the bad guy, and you are a qualified marksman so a litte 
less than super accurate is ok.

There are currently 2 pistols out that are revolvers that shoot a BIG round. 
  There is a Government .474, its a SAR, and the grip is for both hands.  
And you can buy a Cassul conversion to make a Ruger Super Red Hawk shoot a 
.454, this gun got famous in Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man.

So like Doc says either or, not that he needed justification I just thought 
I'd drop my two cents in.

Actually in my campaign it could be either.  Since differenct countries
would have different (domestic) manufactures of their arms, but a common
ammo/magazine requirements, you cansay that the Rebels wanted a six shot
hogleg, and everyone else wanted an automatic.  So while the rest of the
world cranked out hugh-automatics, the souther companies developed an old
fashion revolver.  They both have the same range and damage, but the south
has a BIG revolver.
