The rate of travel is indeed on the low side, which makes sense.  However, 
assuming the duly-adjusted somewhat-low miles/hour figure is correct, the 
miles/day figure is still too low - almost as if they were adjusting for the 
reason you cited _twice_.  While the miles/day for walking and horse-riding 
are only adjusted for such reasons once.
