The miles per day is more accurate (and better reflects the problems with
walking/riding) if you scrap the 8 hours of travel per day while driving,
and say you can drive a lot longer in a day than you or a horse can stand
to walk.
For example, I drive a tiny Geo Metro with a manual transmission.
Basically, it's an empty Pepsi can, and I'm sitting on an outboard motor.
But it's still a lot more comfortable for long periods of time than
sitting on a horse or busting my feet while walking.
I'd say you can walk or ride 8 hours in a day, but potentially go 12 or
more at a time while driving.
