  Sons of sitgreaves, if I'm spelling that right.  Metal mages, hucksters who 
dueled manitou for inspiration among other tricks.  But that's not really the 
junker's origin (although your quite correct, that added to their evolution), 
the junker's origin are the technospirits who generally didn't care whether 
you were a mad scientist, huckster, or whatever as long as you were willing 
to participate.  In junkman cometh, it mentions Junkers who not only weren't 
mad scientists before the bombs but were totally mundane before the 
technospirits said hello.  In the toxic shamans book it mentions 
technospirits trying to communicate with shamans, and it presumably would 
have worked if any of those shamans had technical skills.

   Hmm, now that I think about it, but toxic shamans pretty much implies that 
there were loose technospirits before the advent of Junkers.  Any theories as 
to why they didn't make immediate contact?  I can certainly see the manitou 
keeping them away from their mad scientist pets, but that shouldn't have 
stopped them from contacting others.

    Well, technically all Junkers are Technoshamans, whether they think of it 
like that or not.  Their powers are theurgical in nature.
