I didn't mean to rustle your tailfeathers. What I mean was, roll at the
beginning or end of a session, whatever suits you best... and assume that
whatever happened is "off screen". In our Deadlands game, this is how we
handled the Mad Scientist inventions. Let's just say that none of the PCs
wanted to be ON SCREEN when the Mad Scientist made her rolls... it was
safer for everyone (well, not the Mad Scientist, heh), and to be honest, it
wastes a lot of time while the rest of the group sits there while one
character goes through a long involved process that can more easily be
handled between sessions.

So what would generally happen is the Mad Scientist did all her designs
between sessions, wrote up what she needed, and before we started she made
a few rolls for the GM. Then we moved on.

But I don't see anything wrong with rolling for that stuff between gaming
sessions either. As long as the GM is there to witness it, it's on screen
as far as I'm concerned.
