It was probably just a mistake on the writer's part. OTOH...there is a
templar gift with a greater reward that increases your damage by 1 die for
the greater reward.

As for why using a battle axe...maybe it's an in character issue. Ya think?
And a battle axe is one handed, where a great axe is two handed, so if you
want to do a vikso berserk type, you can always use a fightin' florentine
variation with a battle axe in each hand.
