[HoE] Templar Observation
Had this come up the other night. Just tossing it out for general
discussion...
Had a situation where the group was fighting a fearmonger. Specifically, a
Servitor. During the battle, the Templar in question really didn't...well,
do much. I won't bore you with details, but let's just say there was some
group dissension with how to deal with it, and the Templar ended up doing
very little, and actually a bit to, however inadvertently, help the Servitor
survive.
But the Servitor was defeated, the tales were spread, and a Legend Chip
ensued. But now...the Templar wishes to grab a Greater Power.
Now my gut feeling is basically to not let him do this. But...the Saints in
general don't really seem to take this kind of approach. As long as you're
a Templar, if you pay for the levels, you get the levels.
But okay, I figure the Saints overall might actually take a hand here (it
_is_ a Greater Award). Let's say, a kind of "pay for it, but you can't use
it until you redeem yourself" sorta thing.
I'm a little unsure on how to convey that the general mass of Saints are
pissed at him. The general mass of Saints aren't really communicative. And
the guy's Patron Saint is Stern. The fact that the Templar's attitude
towards innocents got him this Saint might give you a few hints as to how
the Servitor almost escaped... :)
Anyhoo, the only approach I can really think of that covers all the bases is
to have Stern show up in a dream and deliver the message (although
dismissing the other saints as "wusses" and cheering on the Templar for his
actions himself). The redemption will probably involve some heroic
defending of innocents (which might put the guy at odds with Stern anyway,
although not too likely).
I'm not that concerned about the player carping (it's not like he's paying
Bounty Points to get those Greater Rewards, so he's not out anything). But
when you got a player that gets it into his head that Templars are a
bit...different than what they appear to be in the Sourcebook, it can get a
bit sticky. And since we've seemed to determine that Simon & Co. pretty
much let the Templars have a free hand in carrying out their vows (see
discussions from a month or so ago), enforcement from that quarter doesn't
seem very workable.
Any thoughts, suggestions, improvements?
