Re: [HoE] Survivor Settlement Ideas anyone?
One I tossed together last night used Keokuk, IA as the setting, but could
be placed almost anywhere.
Basically a kind of Disney-esque "Main Street" kind of town, crossed with
Downunder from "A Boy And His Dog". Somewhat isolated, and the more violent
types are given guns and left to guard the outskirts (along with lots of
booby traps). Since the folks collect a pretty heavy toll for all the
traffic going across the Des Moines River (right before it intersects with
the Mississippi, and at a spot where there is a gate to get through the
Mason-Dixon Wall - it does follow the Iowa/Missouri border, doesn't it?),
they can afford to keep the main street of their town in a pristine, 1890's
kind of shape.
Needless to say, this seriously bugged out the player characters passing
through. Streetcleaners sweeping up after their tire tracks, friendly hotel
staff (with a tendency to burst into song - 'Be Our Guest' is popular'), a
fake cemetary with "humorous" tombstone epitaphs, and a dinner with fresh
food (venison, which the bad boys bring in from hunting parties). Most of
the town's population lives behind the false-front facade of Main Street.
Haven't decided for sure yet, but am probably not gooing to put in any deep
dark secret - the townsfolk are just a bit wacko. The only two problems the
party had was that A) the party's Vet of the Weird West Huckster tried a
Hunch on the meat to see if they were cannibals, Busted, and drew an
insanity that he now has random flashbacks to the deer right before it was
killed, and B)...
*POSSIBLE SPOILER*
The townfolk buy their potatoes from the Convoy, and thus have the "Spuds
O'Doom" outlined in the Road Warriors book. The mashed potatoes that come
with venison dinner required them to make Vigor checks at the listed
difficulty. fortunately, they made it.
Don't know if such a setting is totally "viable" in the HoE setting, but it
sure was fun...
