I had no idea that that one parapgraph in TJC would spark so much debate.
Okay, after reading everything everyone's written on the subject, here's 
what
I propose (I hesitate to call this official, let's see what everyone 
thinks):

(John's proposal for errata/addition snipped here, although I still have it 
if someone wants to see it)


I don't currently have anything to add to what I said, and apparently nobody 
else does either.  However, until John says he's no longer interested in 
finding out what everyone thinks, it still strikes me as a valid matter for 
discussion and a Good Place to go if anyone has anything new to say on the 
topic.
