Because all of the manitous are more powerful.

Instead of 1hit die orcs, the weeniest manitou is now a 5th level
fighter/assasin.  They all have more juice available to pump down the line
into the huckster's head if he loses control of the hex.

And I dispute the claim that hucksters always try and find the most
powerful manitou available.  There are hexes  that don't require a max out
hand to achieve the effect you want, and there are several hexes that have
an effective hand cap, where hands greater then X have no additional effect.

Anyway.

If you don't like the way they work now, do what I do and create your own
system and use it for your games.
