Actually, in one of the subtle rule changes between HoE and Deadlands, you're allowed to buy Edges
with aptitude points, and there's no limit of 10 edge points.  Hindrances get you more aptitude
points, which you can spend however you want, but there's still that limit of 10 Hindrances.
