Re: [HoE] contested roles (peg)
Let's take the obligatory Arm Wrestle Contest between two guys. Now
the Marshal can go ahead and set the TN for each Strength roll at a Fair(5)
but he can also change it to show adverse effects on one of the guys and
not the other. Maybe one guy is going to use his left hand so his TN for
his Strength roll is going to be a 7 instead. Each person rolls their
Strength dice and counts the number of successes against his TN. The
person gets 1 Success for making the TN and also gets +1 Success for every
extra 5 points he made it over the roll. Also, it is important to note
that if you don't make at least the TN, you are, for lack of a better way
of saying it, at -1 Successes.
So say that Roland arm wrestles left-handed against Teller. The
Marshal assigns a TN of 7 for Roland and a 5 for Teller. Each rolls and
Roland gets an 18 for his roll and Teller only gets a 3.
Roland gets a Success for making the 7 roll, then +1 for rolling
higher than a 12, and again for higher than 17 for a total of 3 Raises.
Teller doesn't even get a Success so he is at -1 Successes.
The grand total is a difference of 4 Successes. Roland pretty much
can break the table as he whips up on Teller. Teller just ain't the hero
that Roland is.
Now if each person had only succeeded at the roll and not received any
Raises, they would each be considered to have gained One Success with
neither gaining a benefit over the other. They would be still contested
and could probably re-roll during the next Action.
Hope that wasn't too long-winded and helped you out.
