Can you use chips to buy additional damage dice? We'd always ruled no, but
one player was adamant that it should be allowed. It wouldn't freak me out on
strength checks as much, but it seems like it could have some serious balance
issues. What's the official ruling?

Nope. The rules are clear and you're doing it right. Just check out the Fate
Chip section; it's very strict what they can be spent on.

There is a catch, though. Fate Chips can be spent on Trait rolls, and the
Strength part of a damage roll in hand-to-hand is a Trait roll. So a person
*can* sort of spend chips on damage in hand-to-hand. Of course, he cannot use
chips to add to or reroll the *weapon's* damage dice.

Say I'm wielding an ax with STR+2d8. I can spend chips on the Strength roll,
but not on the 2d8 roll.
