The bullet doesn't tumble in mid-air.

They "tumble" inside the body, bouncing off bones and doing a lot more
damage then if they had just punched straight through.

As for the craftsmanship of the AK-47s, from what I understand, they were
very reliable; so much so that some soldiers in 'Nam (when the M16 was newer
and much less reliable) would use AKs, instead.
