For cases in which some rules contradict others, why
not just remove the contradicted rules from the
scorekeeping altogether (rather than apply then
unapply).

On various other topics, I think it is important to
try somehoe to maintain various routes to points so
that there are a number of possible win-win trades. 
People are likely to be much more conservative if they
perceive trades to be exclusively zero sum.
