Re: [DL] [Deadlands Classic / CoC] Converting "The Spawn"
SOME SPOILERS
My recomendations as a long time Cthulhu GM and a long
time Marshal and as someone having run Adios Amigos is
as follows...
1)In Adios A-Migo a bunch of the monsters are given
quickness of 1d(something)... don't use that... give
them at least a 2. The chances of the monster botching
quickness tests and therefore staring dumbly at your
players while they run away is a lot higher with 1d8
then it is with 2d6. When I ran Adios A-Migo, both the
new Jerusalem townsfolk and the Migo kept getting 0
cards over and over again.
2)Come up with your own hit-location tables for
unusual monsters. Deadlands works fine so long as you
can spread the wounds over a wide area... but when you
have something that has only "guts" and head like a
Dhole, the wounds (if they can do any) pile up really
fast. My preference is to divide up blob and snakelike
monsters into multiple sections of guts to fill out
the table. Keep in mind though that you mucking with
the hit-location table will cause monsters to be
tougher (or weaker) then an equivalently statted human
being.
3)Emphasize the smaller hoard style monsters like
ghouls and deep-ones. Deadlands causes these low
powered monsters to provide plenty of challenge to
players when thrown in groups.
4)For any truly and alien monster that is supposed to
be powerful, make it immune to wind and stun.
Alternately a rule made on this mailing list by
someone else works nicely. The rule is the "1/2
minimum" for wind damage, which states that a weapon
must do at least half a creatures size in order to
cause wind damage. This works very well for extremely
large opponents with little armor and not particularly
alien physiologies who are just too big to be easily
brought knocked out by a pistol.
5)Kill the bastards. But then again, you probably knew
that. ;)
