[DL] Pete revisited {spoilers}
Spoiler space//.....
Last time, I swear I post on this--the thread is nearly dead anyway.
Sorry I didn't reply earlier to this, but I've been very ill--doc said
something abolut SARS and tuberculosomethig.... :-)
Anyway, if the D20 person doesn't like the idea of "making things up to fit
the game" for Stone and hates what the guidelines state for Stone, how about
stuff that would freak out die hard D20 players? Instead of "Any +1 magic
item will hurt Stone when he ghosts," how about Stone: Special Abilities:
immunity to all magic items under +5. Never did like the idea that a +1
sword is magic anyway--can't a +1 sword be nonmagic and just a superior
weapon?
"Why would Stone waste a combat round to ridicule?" Oh yeah, I forget this
is D20 and I assume that means it's "You take a turn, I take a turn" combat.
Hmmm.. Well in Classic, in one combat sequence (ie: one run of "Any Aces?
Any Kings?....) typical players can have a max of five actions. Stone with
his abilities can have a max of nine. So, if D20 follows the old one attack
per round that can increase to 3/2 rounds, and 2/1 rounds, I'd say that
Stone would have 4 attacks per round, plus he has the option to go whenever
he wishes to. Oh, make it really obscene (letting the players know it) and
make it 5 attacks per round. THEN he'd have enough actions to "waste one on
ridicule."
"Vamoosin' only raises his AC by +1, big deal." Then make it raise his AC
by +5. Heck, do like I said and make it so he can Ghost, or do a combat
action before the players, whatever. Don't get hidebound by rules.
"Stone walks out of the burning crater, walks three miles to the rim and
climbs out unscathed." Yeah, that's funny. Or you could do one of Stones
attacks out in the open ("I'm rolling for Stones attack, [rolls d20] and he
gets a 5. Let's see, we add in his bonus to hit, and that makes it a 45, a
critical hit.") and see how the "roll players" like that. If your players
demand dice rolls, and whatnot, go for it--make it obscene. Heck, when my
group went up against him, I did something similar--he attacked, I yanked
out every d12 I had, rolled them, wrote down the numbers, rolled them all
again, wrote down the numbers, then rolled them AGAIN. By this time, one
player said, "Uh, that 12D12 so far." to which I replied, "Yeah, I'm about
halfway done," and continued to roll some more. I think that freaked them
out more than hearing the word, "Stone."
Also, someone asked about how to work in Stone with Devil's Tower if the
players know Stone. Like someone else mentioned, I just used his first name
Jasper. The funny thing was, when they got there ans saw him, I described
him and showed the picture of him chained to the wall. One player said,
"Ugh. I think we should leave him there!" "But after everything else
you've seen in this hellhole? You'd leave some innocent man in here to
die??" "I don't think that's a man!!" :-)
