[DL] Food at the game [was: The dead of Deadlands? [OT]]
[GM Mastery listserv - here's a thread that took an interesting turn on
another listserv - anybody have anything to contribute?]

Most guys bring their own, or else we discuss over email/phone-tag if we're
gonna all order chinese or something together. Generally, if the GM
(usually me) doesn't order something, the other players send goodies down
and share - a blatent attempt to curry favor, which works - it's even known
the garner xp rewards if the treat is really good, or timely.
If a player doesn't bring/order food, they can generally weasel some out of
someone else - no one likes puppy-hungry-eyes for long. Although, generally
there's a trade of some sort involved - the guy who runs to the corner for
sodas gets to buy himself one on someone else's dollar. Heck, I've seen a
player charge healing spell and buff priority for snacks and pop. We've
even seen magic items traded in the game for real-life food.
Occationally, I'll cook something up, as a treat, but it's rare - I've got
better things to do for prepping for a game. My wife used to cook, but
after the two things I warned her about came true, she stopped - 1) she
wouldn't get the thanks she was expecting, b/c she's not downstairs gaming
(she isn't a gamer, just an Evercrack addict), and 2) the gamers would come
to expect it, and would bitch-n-moan if she ever failed to cook for them.
Both happened, and she doesn't cook any more.
*shrug* It all works out.
of course, the group dynamics here are weird, and I like instituting odd
house stuff - for example, I give characters "freebie" magic, money, or
equipment on holidays (often trying to stick to the theme of the holiday -
one of my D&D PCs will be getting a ring of jumping, and another will be
getting a magical egg, to correspond with an upcoming christian holiday),
and I give a freebie on the player's birthday. I'm the only GM I know that
does that, but the players look forward to it, and since I'm notoriously
stingy with magic and sometimes money in my game, they get a kick out of it.
