You can only Get the Drop inside the first range
band (in Wierd Wars, I don't have the D20 version of Deadlands but assume they
are the same).

Unaware targets are actually covered in the
'Getting the drop' (or a similar name; I don't have the book handy) section.
If I remember properly, getting the drop on someone always allows you to make
a coup de grace shot / melee attack regardless of the feats or skills you
possess.
