Every character I've ever played has been white if not
literally anglo-saxon, unless I was playing a
non-human. I'm usually uncomfortable about it because
I don't want to play the ethnicity stereotypically, or
unknowingly start to play the character
stereotypically. For this reason, I am a big fan of
the Gone Native edge. I have had one anglo-saxon
character "go native" and I once wrote up a character
as an ex-Confederate who had gone native with the
Navajo. I love the Shaman background as well (both
characters were Shamen), but I've never felt like
attempting an actual indian character. Especially with
our current group (long story).

On a side note, my new character is my first attempt
at playing a black character. But one could look at it
and say that the only reason I'm playing him is
because he's unusual enough in his own way that I need
never think of him as a black character... because
he's a midget.

Don't ask me where I found that picture, I don't
remember, all I remember is mentally exclaiming
"That's my next character!" when I found it

what about the rest of you? do you usually play
characters that are the same ethnicity as yourself?
how often do you play an ethnically different
character, especially in games that offer human as the
only race?
