[DL] what would you do?
Hey All,
I would like to pick all the brains I can and see your opinion on something. I have a situation that is brewing in a gaming group I am in and am not sure how to handle it. I would love to hear any suggestions that you might have.
Here's the situation: There are three players and the gm. One of our players a close friend of the gm, and has never played a rpg before. He and the gm worked out a deal where he doesn't have to learn the system or read the books. Basically he says "I want to do "X", and the gm tries to do that. This character is a MS/Huckster/Mental Mage that is the illegtimate son of Hellstromme. The other player is a mutual friend of mine and the gm, but always plays his characters very secretive. I'm kind of the odd ball out, but didn't mind. We had a rather ... brutal party and my blessed character really didn't fit in. So, I made up another character that fit more in the group. I thought this might clear things up. However, it seems to me that the gm and our mutual "friend" were causing my character needless aggrevation. Example: while trying to obtain information, I asked said mutual friend's character to throw me some water (we were in the desert and weren't allowing the prisoner to have any). Well mr mutual had gone into the steam wagon/van and was making up Lethe Water to make the prisoner forget what they told us once they broke. Said friend throws me the lethe water, gm makes roll and I forget everything that happened that day. I was like "I meant real water". "You didn't say regular water" was the reply. REGULAR WATER? My response was that I didn't know what he was doing, why would I say "regular" water if I didn't have any reason to expect there to be some other type of water? Plus the fact this character has NO MS or science background to be doing this anyway.
Sessions later, after our almost Godlike MS built a time machine, we ran into a HOE version of mutual friend's character. Figuring we were safe, my character goes to sleep with a gun. I fail (not botch, just fail) some check. Next thing I know, my character is DEAD. Neck snapped by HOE version of mutual friend's character. Since this character is harrowed with death mask, I have to play out my character being played by the other player. After the game, I ask him "WHY?" uhh.... so I could become harrowed. We have the Necronomicom. But then the GM rules that the MS can't use it to do that. We take a break after that and I have to come up with a new character for no reason. It's one thing to loose a character "fair" while fighting. But by your own party...?
Then another mutual "friend" moves back to town and joins up with us. Then it really starts. Most of my characters are some sort of gunslinger. I don't think I've had a character with a shootin' score of D10 or less. Suddenly my TN is higher than the character shooting from the same spot. At first I thought he just made a mistake and let it go. But stuff like that keeps happening and I'm getting tired of it. Then the straw that broke my camels back happened. The short of it was my character was asleep and awoke in a very sexual situation with two NPCs of the same sex. Everyone but me thought it was just a gutbuster. Later I thought I should have just gotten up and said "You are all sick" and left. But for some unknown reason I stayed. The last session I was at, which was the Heart of Darkness series of modules, where Stone and Grimme have at it. After that session the gm makes the comment while pointing at every one BUT me that "you were inportant to the Reckoners, and you and you". I was afraid it would go downhill for my character after that and I left for good before he was killed.
Oh did I mention that when the MS came back to "present" day after the HOE adventure that mutual friend got merge future and present versions of his character and get a MAJOR power boost? Imagine the "man with no name" with the hammer of Thor. Continous fear level of 3 to 4 around him. When I created my 3rd character I had to pass 4 fear checks with this character? After the sexual encounter and trying to save my party member's life and not even getting a thank you, I had enough. We had "cancelled" the next session, but everybody but me just "showed up" and they all went out to eat and our gm proceeded to give out my character's "mysterious past" to everyone BUT me. Also, after I made the comment that "thor" was too powerful for begininng characters, I was told basically "no, he isn't". But after giving out my character's secrets, they proceeded to roll up new characters and move the game night. Guess it was a good thing I left, because NOBODY told me that game night was changed.
So, Ok, I've gone on too long and probably sound like I'm whinning way too much. What do you think? Should I have left? Should I have left a lot earlier? Or should have stuck it out? I was miserable. I asked all the game members (and the gm!) if anything was wrong or if I had offended them. If so, I apologized. "No, everything is fine" is all they had to say. So, what do any/all of you think? I apologize for the long email, I needed to get this off my chest. Plus, I would like to hear some impartial opinions.
Thank You,
Peter, Snake and Ash.
