Well. WotC and L5R is an . . . interesting one.
Way back when, L5R was put out by two companies - AEG and Isomedia.
Isomedia held the rights to the setting. They were so close that you
practically couldn't tell them apart.
Isomedia reorganized into FRPG - Five Rings Publishing Group. Their idea
was to become an umbrella company to help other game companies put out
card games. Under this concept they worked L5R and picked up the licenses
for Dune and Doomtown, as well as a couple others.
Well, not long after AEG/FRPG announced that the L5R game wold NOT end at
GenCon '98 (contrary to their initial advertising), FRPG announced that
they were being bought by WotC. And taking the license for the L5R
setting with them. . . (as well as the Doomtown and Dune CCG licenses)
That and a few other . . things. . . explain why Rokugan is the default
setting for 3rd ed. Oriental Adventures and why AEG can get away with
Warlord.
