Oh agreed about the chamber pots but there would still
be a short term shortfall and disruption of supply
while bringing the new source of nitrates into
production.

I have no idea if they could produce enough. The CSA
never could but the North has a much larger population
which is more urbanised. I dread to think how much
'raw material' New York alone could produce.

There are South American sources as well (the famous
Chilean nitrates) but the RN can control access to
those.

In Deadlands of course alternative propellants might
be developed more quickly and there is always
Ghostrock - I have a bizzare image of very carefully
shaped cores of ghost rock with a hole through the
middle fired and ignited by a small black powder
charge so the projectile is effectivly a sort of
ramjet.
