Our First Attempt at Deadlands
Hey fellow gamers! I've got 2 great stories to tell you about, as the
title states, our first attempt at Deadlands. The group I game with started
off just like any other gaming group playing D&D. Well after awhile of
playing 3rd edition the group decided we needed a change. Our GM, Josh, had
been looking at the Deadlands Handbook earlier and though the whole concept
of playing a RPG based around cards and poker. We thought about this for a
few days and decided it sounded great. Well, we all read the handbook and had
a little trouble with all the rules. The character generation was easy enough
to figure out so we all generated our characters and decided we would try to
figure it all out as we played. Our whole group happens to be in the band
program and we were on our way home from a marching competition when we
decided we wanted to attempt at a dice less game of Deadlands. We all had our
character concepts decided on and set for a real game so we decided to use
them. The party consisted of a gunslinger, Andrew's character, a mad
scientist based off of Mad Eye Moody from Harry Potter, Shine's Character,
and a Muckraker with a golden retriever Eureka, my character. Yes I know that
all of you that have played the short lived Deadlands CCG know that Eureka is
a card from the game, and know it wasn't Eureka?!. Well the games starts out
with the group in a bar not knowing each other and it's our job to find
introduce the char to each other. No problem except my char has a little
secret the he hides by being a muckraker. It turns out that after Andrew, and
I have introduced our characters a freaky looking old guy walks into the
saloon with only one eye, a peg leg and scars on his face. With all the
hindrances that Shine's char concept had to take he ended up with a pace of
one. Yes, a pave of ONE!!! He had to ride the horse everywhere we went, and
yes, he even rode it into the bar. After seeing this and getting all the
introductions taken care of we are approached by a shady looking guy that
wanted to hire some "hit men" to take out some one for him. Well of course we
accepted the job. Well for some odd reason the guy we were looking for
happened to be in the bar at the time. We confronted him and he took off.
Well Andrew's gun slinger with his 4 six shooters and 2 rifles quick draws a
rifle, draws a bead on the back of the guys head as he's running down the
street, pulls the trigger and blows the guys brains out with one shot easily.
Now, this is all dice less so we have no prob pulling off what we want to do.
Well, we take care of the guy and go back to get our pay. Our employer takes
it in his mind to cut out and run on us. He disappears and re-appears out on
the street in front of the saloon. The group takes off after him and Andrew
makes another called headshot but the guy has disappeared into thin air
again. We search around and don't find anything. My dog Eureka has the "sixth
" sense edge and she is able to pick up something strange in the area and I
follow her to the shadows of a building and find footprints leading out of
the shadows and out into the dessert then disappear again. Blasted hucksters.
We give up on trying to find him and head back to the saloon where our rooms
are. The gunslinger heads to his room, and the rest of us take a seat at the
bar and separate tables and order food and drinks. Eureka, my faithful dog,
perks up and starts to head for the stairs. I get up and follow her to the
gunslingers room where I can hear talking. I listen in and hear what sounds
like the end of some deal then no more voices. I'm curious and knock on the
door and don't get an answer. I continue to knock without a reply. So I
decide to initiate one of my powers and I side step, yes I said it, I side
step into the gunslingers room where he is sitting on his bed cleaning his
gun. I ask him what had just happened and scare him pretty good. Well he
draws on me and says nothing. Of course I don't believe him so I use another
power by spending a rage point, yes a rage point, and I turn into my crinos
form of a werewolf. Yes that is my secret, I'm a werewolf, but not just any
werewolf. I converted a character from Werewolf: Wild West into the Deadlands
game from the dime novels, Under a Harrowed Moon, well he takes a shot at me
as I'm changing and GM rules it hits before I get fully transformed so I cant
regenerate the damage. Well, it's enough to kill me. Eureka is going nuts and
Andrew opens the door where Shines Character had come to investigate the
noise and kills Andrew when he sees me dead on the floor. Well Eureka gets
even crazier and knocks Shines character down the stairs breaking his neck.
Then the bar keep pulls his sawed off shotgun from under the counter and
heads upstairs to investigate. All he sees is 2 dead bodies and a dead man at
the bottom of his stairs so he goes and shoots my dog point blank with his
gun. This adventure turned out to be a total PK with no help from the GM.
Like I said, a total Party kill. Oh well, what can I say. It was a dice less
game on a bus ride home. Crazy huh? Well if yawl liked this drop me a line at
Wolfgod820@aol.com telling me what you think and if I get enough replies I'll
take the time to type up the 2nd story where we actually tried to play the
game correctly
