Where are you getting your information on the LeMat?  I thought (if I recall
correctly) that Law Dogs described two versions of the LeMat.  One was a .36
caliber that did 2d6 damage, and the other was a .40 caliber that did 3d6
damage.  And maybe I'm imagining it, but I thought they had something
similar in the DPHB.>>

Close... The LaMat's in Law Dogs are the Grapeshot Pistol (2d6, .40 caliber)
and the Grapeshot Revolver (3d6, .42 caliber). The Difference between the
two was the fact that the Revolver used C&B ammunition.

The reason I can see the Pistol only doing 2d6 is for game balance, than
anything else. IMO, if the Pistol did 3d6 damage then having two Grapeshot
Pistols would be the equivalent as having 3 Peacemakers and a
Double-Barreled shotgun. Don't forget that the Grapeshot Pistol holds 9
rounds plus the 1 shotgun round!
