Odin was divine from the start, he helped kill the (danish word for it:
jaette) that formed the basis for Ygdrassil and the creation of the
worlds...
 
BTW: I'm currently working on some rules for viking rituals, blot and runes,
though I'm still in the balancing part of my work.

I may be confusing the story as well... It may be that achieving godhood
is as you said, and he traded an eye for knowledge as a seperate event.
