Most shotgun shells of the time were paper with a few of the
British ones being metal. The paper is going to burn away and since the
explosion of ammo is all based on a buildup of gas and a pressure release
you are not going to get much. Now if they are black powder you will get an
explsion. Black powder is explsive while modern smokeless is not.
