Re: [DL] Let's talk about drugs...
From the Columbia online encyclopedia... Fairly obvious why folks liked them. As a side note, absinthe was made with herbs which were halucinogenic, and laudinum was an excellent pain killer and anti-diharetic.
absinthe (ab´sinth)
An emerald-green, toxic liqueur distilled from wormwood and other aromatics, including angelica root, sweet-flag root, star anise, and dittany, which have been macerated and steeped in alcohol. It was invented by a Dr. Ordinaire, a Frenchman who lived in Switzerland. Genuine absinthe is 70% to 80% alcohol. Because of the harmful effect it
has on the nerves, it has been banned in most western countries.
laudanum (lôd´nm) (KEY)
tincture, or alcoholic solution, of opium, first compounded by Paracelsus in the 16th cent. Not then known to be addictive, the preparation was widely used up through the 19th cent. to treat a variety of disorders. Many literary and artistic figures, including Coleridge, Poe, Moussorgsky, and De Quincey, are known to have been addicted.
