Re: [DL] water and ammunition
Shotgun cartridge casings were also made out of metals other than brass. I
"inherited" a spent 12 gauge cartridge from my grandfather made out of some
silvery and quite durable metal, clearly not brass. Admittedly, the casing
was made by Holland & Holland so it was obviously British "luxury"
ammunition mostly likely produced within the last 40-odd years.
The other factor to remember with regards to Old West metallic
cartridges, is that some were designed to be re-used after being fired.
This obviously is a possibility for sadistic Marshals to inflict all kinds
of misery on would-be penny pinchers. ;-)

loose powder and shot in a paper cartridge for a muzzle loading shotgun.
The first shotgun cartridges were all brass. This type of cartridge is very
expensive though, and was the driving force behind the mostly paper or
plastic cartridges we are familiar with.

1960's. In WW2 they found the paper cartridges would swell in humid
conditions and not fit in the shotgun. In Vietnam they found that plastic
would melt under combat conditions and muck up the action and barrel. The
all brass cartridges did not have these problems.
