For one version of that exact situation, you could try
"How Few Remain" by Harry Turtledove. Custer and some
lads sort out the locals with some of those damned
gatling gun contraptions.

While I'm not a Turtledove fan as such (there are only
so many novels you can read from one author where the
South win/delay/draw the American Civil War before you
shout "GET OVER IT ALREADY!") the Great War series
does sort of portray what the Deadlands Civil War
battles may look like. Aeroplanes, subs, gas, machine
guns, steamtanks etc.
