Re: [DL] A Question
While the Mormons might have access to Hellstrome's toys (and I would like
to point out that I think Hellstromme is unlikely to be a hard and fast
ally) I doubt that they would have the sheer resources in terms of manpower,
heavy artillery and ammunition to defeat a determined Union assault
especially if the latter were to use the Denver Pacific's rails to move
troops and supplies. The Union could send 20-30,000 soldiers plus equipment
to Deseret without too much trouble. Quite frankly, I doubt that
Hellstromme has enough toys to repel an assault on that scale.
Furthermore, if approached over the salt flats, Salt Lake City has
little to recommend it as far as physical obstacles (aside from a lack of
drinkable water which is resolvable with good logistical organisation.)
While rattlers would be a dangerous nuisance, they are unlikely to pose a
real threat. Think about it, a large group army could easily arrange to
have a number of squads of men specially equipement with anti-rattler
weapons, such as steam wagon mounted gattling guns, etc. Rattlers don't
strike me as being are real threat to an organised army that knows what to
expect. (And keeping the Union informed of the basics of dealing with
rattlers must surely be part of the Agency mandate!)
I must admit that I have not read "City o' Gloom", but instead base the
above from more general sources. It is my guess that the failure to deal
with Deseret by the Union is probably due to demands of the war with the
C.S.A. and political pragmatisism on Grant's behalf. Simply put, taking SLC
by force ain't worth the bother in terms of politics and military
expenditure.

Objet : [DL] A Question
How prepared are the Mormons for defending the rest of Utah? Ogden and Salt
Lake would be defended fairly well, I think, but if the Union weren't so
distracted how well could they defend the rest of the disputed territory?
