I think that's a little harsh. I know I didn't get the whole damage thing at
first until I went through it with my Marshal and another player.

If none of his friends have ever played in an RPG before, and he's only just
got the books, it's not unexpected that he might not have understood some of
the mechanics straightaway.

In the meantime, Goggen, he does have a point: re-read your books carefully.
Most of the questions you have will probably be answered therein.
