I look at it this way.  Those are still photos (or at least representations 
of them.).  In the world of deadlands I think that smoke must look like 
smoke.  If you've ever stopped and looked at a cloud or smoke stack you can 
see all kinds of odd thing in it.

Now as for wailing souls?  Well science managed to explain away the wailing 
noise maybe they have a theory.  I'd have to say that the burning of souls 
might only be visible to people with second sight, magical enhancement, or 
someone within the hunting grounds.

It really should in my Op.ed. look more like the smoke on the great maze 
cover.  You wouldn't really notice it unless you were looking for it.
