I am the only one in my group that buys any of the books for Deadlands and
CoC, but then I am the only one that runs them and I tend to run most of our
games.  The other game we play is one of the member's home brew so there is
nothing to buy for that one.

I think I would buy the books though if I played in something vs running it
just to be able to know the rules and the background, but I am not a rules
lawyer on any account.
