Yeah, I wrote a little short due lack of time.
The fact is, there are two types of martial arts: long ranged and struggling,
if you could say so (my English isn`t the best). My suggestion is, that the
knife-fighter has more trouble to hit the bo-swinger, but once the knife-Joe
hit his target, the bo-wielder is at a disadvantage.
But this is also true for a karateka fighting a someone trained in boxing or
ju-jitsu, because karate is no close-ranged martial art while the other both
are for distances of mere centimeters (or inches as you woul say) or even on
ground. As I know you can disable many martial artists by throwing them to the
ground and trying to stick them to it.
On the other hand: What`s possible with a bo that`s possible with a rifle. And
when the gunslinger is at a fighting distance appropriate for a bo he could
even shoot, but only when the knife-fighter is near the rifler-wearer is in
trouble, if he isn`t able to make distance, espacially if he`s lying on the
ground.
