Disagree.

You're making a blanket statement that, while true in some instances, is a
terrible generalization.  Granted, the knife-fighter has several advantages
over the staff-fighter: speed and a blade being the two most prominent. 
However, reach is a larger factor than I suspect you give credit for.  A
trained martial artist with bo staff is not taught solely to block and
attack.  He is also taught how to maintain his distance, just like the
knife fighter is taught to close that distance.  If the bo fighter can, in
fact, maintain that distance, it is the knife fighter who has no chance
(barring a thrown knife, of course- a risky proposition for the knife
fighter).

I've been in the above situation plenty of times sparring with and against
a fake knife, so I know of what I speak.
