If these guys are already gamers then just say Hey I have this cool game I want
to try... (and if that doesn't work bribe them with pizza)
Actually that would probably work with non-gamers too...;)

I've always prefered having them make their own characters. That way they will
have at least some personal interest in the character, providing a better
character personality.
Made-up characters are good for one-shots or Cons where you really need certain
characters in a certain setting.
Finally: should I let my better half play as well, or will she end up

I've played with several couples (married/ or just togethor) and only once have
I seen a significant other get all ticked off about the game. So I would
definately say give her an invite.
One other note tho, if you kill somebody's character they will probably be
really ticked no matter what their relationship is to you. Now if they die of
their own character's stupid actions that's different...(My Healer charges the
Delta Prime tank! is a good example of that one..)
And remember, just have fun and don't get too ticked when the PCs stomp your bad
guys. ;)
