Nobody really seemed to answer this part of your question.  However, yes, it 
is simply a +5 to the final die roll, not five extra dice.

As several folks answered from the FAQ, yep, it affects how many Wounds they 
can take.  It also affects Strength-type stuff that isn't skill-based (like 
Stun checks and lifting).
