You mean Wildfire/Drake Burroughs of the Legion of Super Heroes? Again, I
wouldn't qualify him as a Bomber. He never released little (or not so
little) parts of his body to do his energy-blasting schtick. He seemed to
be more one of those "fire bursts of explosive energy" kinda guys. Yeah, he
wore a containment suit, but I never really got the impression that he was
actually releasing pieces of his body to fire off his energy blasts.
Couldn't tell you about New Universe, sorry. :)
Again, I think that the Bomber is relatively obscure as a mainstream heroic
character. Note that the two best examples, Nitro and Shrapnel, were both
villains. As I noted earlier, it really doesn't seem to be a power that too
many player characters would want to take, although that depends on how
cruel and/or "realistic" the Guide wants to be with it, and how accepting
the other players are of the guy.
A hero-type undergrounder that blows up his whole body (which he may have to
do whether he wants to or not if he takes enough physical damage to head or
torso) is probably going to be captured a few hours later when the
authorities wait for him to reassemble. That's the problem with being an
underground-type hero (if that's how your campaign is oriented, of course).
A NPC can afford to wait, because he'll probably be working for The Man.
