Well, my current "Beta Testers" that I'm running BNW for consists of a
Teleporter and a Tough. The TP broke out a gun in the second game, but
didn't like having to use it. it doesn't "fit" with his character. He has
used home-made bombs that are about 1/2 strength of grenades (which are
seriously powerful, btw. More so than they look.) His other trick is to port
an opponet into the air for the falling damage. First time he did it tho, he
killed the poor bastard. Not that the gunner didn't have it comming. =] He
also does a neat bit with the Teleport Others and Entangle tricks. he just
slides a target into a wall without doing exploding damage. And unless
you're a goliath, getting out is gonne be tough.
The Tough uses martial arts and the body-weapon trick to gain extra damage
to be able to bring the pain and hasn't had to use a gun.
I can see that most classes, except for the Goliaths, Gadgeteers, Toughs,
Scrappers and Fu Fighters will tend to have to use guns to be effective
against their opponets. And give them AP ammo, and they can do a number on
all their targets, and can even make the Toughs sweat.
As for how this affects the feel and power level of the game, it is one of
the things that attracted me to the game, rather than sticking with HERO or
going to ABBERANT or the new Marvel game. I'd been itching for a game with
this kind of "feel". Not so much as the "low level" as in that the
characters are impacted in the combat. Sort of like in SAVAGE DRAGON by
Larson, where super-battles have consequences for the characters. There have
been the standard "Ow! Stop! I give" like in most comics, but there also
have been characters maimed, crippled, blown into comas and killed outright.
In most super-hero games, the characters, like most comic characters, aren't
in any "real" danger. Whereas Spider-Man and Superman are protected by the
marketing department, characters are protected by the rules. It's nice for
combat to have serious consequences for a change.
