The Firetop Mountain Servers
Notices
Saturday Aug. 14 2004 - there has been some data corruption after a server reboot. Janitors are looking into the cause of the problem. FM should be back up sometime in the next few days. The worst case for data would be that we rollback to a Thursday Aug. 12 backup.
Saturday Aug. 21 2004 - the server is up again. Games in progress are back to their Thursday Aug, 12 state.
Servers
- The Main Server
This is the current server, where bug fixes and new ideas are
supported. There are some significant differences between the rules
here and the original "Waving Hands" game - the players suggested
these changes to make the game better!
- The Classic Server
The Classic Server no longer exists as a separate entity. Use the
'classic' SpellBook on the Main Server to play a game using the Classic
spell gestures.
- The Test Server
This server is where changes to the code are tested before being
unleashed on the Main server. This is the place where the Janitor
plays...
Strategy Discussions
Here are two articles written by one of the all time greats of Firetop
Mountain, 'The Shadow' (Thomas Bress).
- What Makes A Winning Game?
Probably the definitive discussion on general tactics.
- Is Paralysis/Finger Of Death all powerful?
This article shows how even the most powerful looking combination
always has a downfall. (This discussion shows about 10 ways to beat
the fearsome Para/FoD). The details of this discussion are no longer
completely relevant, since Paralysis is no longer quite as powerful as
it was on the old Classic Server.
Here is another article on the uses of Invisibility by 'Nom'
(Andrew White).
Source Code
The Firetop Mountain Source Code is available.
Links
Firetop Mountain Unofficial Archives and Information
is another FM website where you can look at many past games.
An up-to-date list of GAMES IN PROGRESS on the
Main server is now available by using this link. The output should match that
produced by the GAMES command in an e-mail submission to the server.
A list of CHALLENGES is also available. This
page should mirror the information provided by a CHALLENGES command sent to
the server.
Want to look up mage SCORES? The
Duel Scores and
Melee Scores scores are also available
individually. The output matches that of the standard
SCORES or STANDINGS commands.
Duel ELO scores are also available. New users start with a score of 1000. A difference of 100 in ELO scores indicates approximately a 2:1 advantage to the higher ranked player.
