[WW] Artillery Fire and Fire Adjustment.
OK, so last night I took a new look at the rules and noticed I got adjusting
fire wrong yesterday.
The answers regarding target point and the deviation of the actual shells
were correct, but my answer regarding adjusting the target point was wrong.
Here is how it works correctly from start to finish.
A person with the Forward Observer feat and Artillery Skill calls back to
the Battalion for a strike. The first thing he does is determine
availability. The person calling for the strike rolls a d20. He must roll a
5 or better if the battery is dedicated to supporting his mission and a 10
or better if it's a general battery supporting any incoming calls.
If the battery is available he makes an artillery skill roll. He must then
stay on the phone with the artillery battery for 10 rounds minus 1 round per
5 points he got on his skill roll.
Once this time has passed a single spotting round will come in. The caller
again makes an artillery roll with a DC of 15. If he succeeds he is able to
place a target point exactly where he wants and the spotting shell then
deviates from that target point as per the fire for effect deviation rule.
At this point the caller can then call for a fire for effect which will send
additional shells at that same target point each round. Each shell will
deviate from the target point per the rules. He can also still adjust the
fire per the rules below.
If he fails to make the DC 15 roll then the target point is deviated. You
roll a d12 for direction and 2d10 in yards to see where the incorrectly
placed target point is located. The spotting shell then deviates from this
point per the fire for effect rules. Once the shell has landed the caller
can then decide if that was good enough and have them fire for effect on
that spot, or he can try to adjust the fire per the following rule.
(This is the part I got wrong.)
If he chooses to adjust the fire another spotting shell lands the following
round using the same target point as last round. The caller uses this
information and makes an Artillery check. He can then adjust the target
point 1 yard in any direction for each point he rolled on this new artillery
check. The following round he can then continue to adjust the fire with one
new spotting round coming in on his initiative or he can fire for effect.
The same trick can be applied to a battery that is already firing for
effect. This rule is called walking fire. However, when walking fire the
caller must make a DC of 10 with his artillery check. If he succeeds with
the check he can then move the target point 1 yard per point he rolled on
the check. Yes this means that if he can walk the fire he can walk it at
least 10 yards since the roll had to beat a 10 just to work. This new target
point would then go into effect the next round.
Sorry for my inconsistencies yesterday. Hopefully this is clearer. Any
questions?
